Snow storm Raleigh, NC Style - stuck in traffic for 4 hours

Image
I got to get this off my chest or it'll be with me all day.  It took me four hours to get to work yesterday. Roughly a 10 mile drive. At time I was moving less than a tenth of a mile in a half an hour. Here's my strategy. I live right between two very busy and highly traveled roads. I saw an email from work that One of my normal routes was so bad that people were abandoning their vehicles. Well.. Atlantic Ave is a very curvy and hilly road. I wouldn't want to drive that road yesterday anyway .. So, i figured,.. take the main road. It'll be plowed right? Wrong. Capital boulevard has about four lanes on each side of the roadway. So an eight lane road.... not plowed yesterday.      As I was sitting in traffic, I could understand that the plows couldn't get through. The timing of the storm couldn't be worse. While school was out, the mid day storm hit while it seemed everyone was trying to get their bread, eggs and milk.      While...

When did the North Pole move so far south? I've heard that this is what Canada feels like, ey? With each snow storm this winter I'm growing more and more concerned about two things: my car and the roof. Normally Connecticut winters aren't too harsh... Just enough to remind you of where you live- New England. You can even own a rear wheel drive sports car and be able to drive it 350 out of 365 days. Not this year. So far the guy in my apartment complex with the BMW M3 has driven it a maximum of five days in January. For me, i have all front wheelers. One car has already taken itself out of harms way with radiator problems. So, what are the hazards that the other car faces: flat tires, fender benders, scrapes, scratches, broken tail lights, and mirrors knocked off by plows. Those slippery roads can cause crashes into poles, buildings, snow banks and other cars. Wow. Makes you want to just thank God for keeping you safe, huh? Unlike bears we cant hibernate through the winte...

Burning Rubber, Shovel, Salt and Sweat

New Haven's skyline over the Snow cake on top of my Car This has been a crazy winter by anyone's account. For all the cold weather hatred , I'll give you this disclaimer: I actually appreciate the winter. Notice I didn't say I love the winter. I think my appreciation comes from living in Florida for 6 years. It's hard to say after half a dozen snow storms, but I got tired of the warm weather monotony. The cold helps you appreciate the hot days. The hot days help you appreciate the cold. So back to this winter and this last storm. I love a challenge but this was tough especially for the people that got stuck in their cars on the highway or stranded at home waiting for Plows to come through. Let's say I got used to the smell of burning rubber on pavement, the smell sometimes taste of salt and sweating. Halfway Out The whole dig out disaster started in the morning.... Or midnight. Digging co-workers out so they can just be at work. There was a wh...
