North Carolina Central - Post-Black History Month

Image
So, I have some left over pictures/stories from black history month. This is a group of them.   I'm not going to get too much into it. North Carolina Central reminds me of FAMU in a lot of ways. It sits in the same city as another large, well-known and highly funded University (Duke = FSU). The obvious: it's an HBCU. Great programs that draw students from all around the globe. Big Campus with a lot of new buildings.. and NO Parking. It was hard to find a place to park. I don't think i found a lot that you didn't need a sticker to park in. I just happened to stop by on the same day as a Career fair, .. I took the chance that i wouldn't get ticketed and towed. Anyway, I love how their Track & Field and Football stadium sit right in the middle of campus. I can only imagine what their homecoming looks like.

Saint Augustine's University

Saint Augustine's was founded in 1867 by the Episcopal Church to educate black teachers.     I'm told that the University chapel was built in the Gothic Revival style.. with stones quarries by the school's first students.      Also located on the campus is the shell of the St. Agnes Hospital and Training School for Nurses.     It was built to provide care for and by African Americans living in the community.

In the process of looking for story ideas, I have learned so much about the Tar Heel state. But, I'm not going to achieve that goal of a story a day.      Why? the same reason why I decided to do a Project 52 instead of a Project 365.        Anyway, I have a list stories I'd like to highlight and places I'd like to visit. So, I'm going to extend this project into at least March and April.       So, let's get to today's local black history factoid/gem: Shaw University.        Let's be clear and honest: I love HBCU's. I  graduated from an HBCU (Florida A&M Univ.)    I grew up in an area that was void of any HBCU's although -- as I wrote last year-- New Haven almost had an HBCU.            I ...
